About

The Smithsonian Museum on Main Street is bringing its exhibit, Crossroads: Change in Rural America, to Rockport. This thought-provoking exhibition explores the dramatic shift in the U.S. population, where rural residents decreased from about 40% in 1900 to less than 18% by 2010. Although rural areas make up the majority of the U.S. landmass, their populations have dwindled, sparking concerns about the future of small towns. The exhibit invites communities to reflect on these changes and how, despite the challenges, rural America continues to innovate and thrive. It highlights how economic resilience and cultural uniqueness can drive future growth and revitalization.
